The growing problem of cyberattacks against school districts merits the strongest possible cybersecurity and data privacy response to help protect students and their personal data. A new technology partnership between Caetra.io, a Harris Beach subsidiary, and CoSN, the nation’s premier professional association for school system technology leaders, helps support school districts in building strong student data privacy programs.
CyMetric, a cloud-based software solution that generates policies and prescribes controls to connect security practices to regulatory requirements, now maps the requirements of the CoSN Trusted Learning Environment (TLE) Seal.
The CoSN TLE Seal is a national distinction awarded to school districts that demonstrate a tangible commitment to protecting student data through modern, rigorous policies and practices. The Seal Program requires school systems to have implemented high standards for student data privacy protections around five core practice areas: Leadership, Business, Data Security, Professional Development, and Classroom.
“School districts that have earned the CoSN TLE Seal have implemented meaningful student data privacy and security programs, and have committed to continuous improvement of those programs,” noted Keith Krueger, CEO of CoSN. “It’s a significant achievement, and we applaud all efforts to support school districts in this important and challenging work.”
CyMetric is the flagship product of Caetra.io, a provider of governance, risk and legal compliance (GRC) software. The CyMetric platform addresses cybersecurity and data privacy risk management across numerous industries.
Currently the software maps major data privacy regulations, including New York Education Law 2-D Part 121, General Data Protection Regulation, the New York Shield Act, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, California Consumer Privacy Act, and Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification, as well as industry-standard security and privacy frameworks, now including TLE.
In addition to integrating the law into controls and policies, the software eases the work of technology teams in mapping legal requirements to specific controls and providing the framework to systematically progress through the work.
Individual school districts in New York and Pennsylvania are among those with CyMetric licenses, as are New York Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) and Pennsylvania Intermediate Units.
“Including TLE requirements as part of the CyMetric license will assist districts in building and maintaining organization-wide privacy programs and ensure they have a roadmap for ongoing maturity of their student data privacy protections,” said Michael Compisi, President, Caetra.io. “Caetra is proud to assist CoSN in solidifying data privacy protocols for the nation’s school districts.”
